Christopher C. Petaja, Attorney and Counselor at Law
Christopher C. Petaja is a third generation Montanan born in Helena, Montana. He grew up in the country near Clancy, Montana, and attended Helena High School. Chris received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Montana. Upon graduating college, Chris moved to San Francisco where he attended law school at Golden Gate University School of Law. While in law school, Chris interned at the San Francisco Public Defenders Office. While working there, he seconded chaired a half of dozen misdemeanor trials ranging from handgun possession cases to assault on a police officer. Chris also competed in the American Association of Justice mock trial completion in Las Vegas, Nevada, while in school. Graduating in the top 10% of his class in 2008, Chris received several CALI and Witkin scholarly awards while in law school. In summer of 2008, Chris took the Montana bar, passed, and was licensed to practice law. In summer of 2010, Chris successfully passed the California bar and is currently licensed in California as well.
As an Assistant Public Defender for 5 years in Bozeman, Montana, Chris has handled hundreds of cases ranging from minor in possession of alcohol (MIP) to felony aggravated assault cases. He has successfully defended many DUI cases both at the pre-trial level and at trial. In his second year as a public defender, Chris received an award for outstanding achievement in his region from the Office of the State Public Defender. Known for his sense of humor and dedication to his clients, Chris is familiar with the Municipal, Justice, and District courts in Gallatin County. Chris has also practiced in Livingston, Belgrade, Three Forks, and Helena.
Having tried dozens of cases, mostly jury trials, Chris has strong trial skills. Petaja Law brings Chris's experienced, aggressive yet civil, approach to private practice.
